The Delaney Director of Memory Care, Robin Brackeen, Now a Certified Dementia Practitioner®

The Delaney® at Georgetown Village, a senior living community located in Georgetown is pleased to announce that Robin Brackeen, Director of Memory Care for The Delaney is now a Certified Dementia Practitioner® (CDP)®.

“The additional CDP training and certification simply adds to Robin’s solid credentials in memory care,” says Sam Richardson, Executive Director. “She has been a passionate memory care leader for over seven years and is loved by our residents and respected by their families. Robin believes individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia should be encouraged to utilize all the abilities they have remaining to experience an active, purposeful and joyful life. And her team does just that every day.”

Brackeen began her career as an educator in special education. In her role as a teacher, she worked with researchers in implementing brain-based learning in a large school system, developed curriculum and was a trainer of other educators. Her transition to memory care work utilized all of those earlier skills.

“At The Delaney, we already had innovative memory care protocols in place under Heartfelt CONNECTIONS – A Memory Care Program®. The additional CDP training and certification simply reinforce the techniques we already have in place,” says Brackeen. “At The Delaney, we believe in continuous learning and always strive to stay on the cutting edge of exceptional care.”

To earn certification, a CDP completes extensive training in the area of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Each student receives resources to support key aspects of dementia care, including communication techniques, disruptive behaviors interventions and tools for addressing concerns such as wandering, aggressive behaviors and poor nutrition.

According to the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners, certification helps assure families that their loved ones will receive sensitive care by a trained and certified health care professional. There’s a reduced risk of injury and confidence that comes with understanding that CDPs know the appropriate activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Also, a CDP is certified to provide sensitive psychosocial support to both residents and families, including education and training in the areas of end-of-life care and comfort measures for end-stage dementia.
